Lecture notes:
I. Africa
A. Book has two mistakes
1. Zimbabwe and Zambia
are switched
2. Zaire is now the Democratic
Republic of Congo
B. Sierra Leone
1. There has been a series
of coupes there over the past few years
2. Nigeria sent in troops
to help support the government; at first they were defeated
by the rebels, but later won and were able to restore the president to
power
C. Libya
1. It is believed that
the suspects responsible for the TWA bombing over Scotland are
living there.
2. The US is currently
in negotiations with the government so the suspects can be
extradited to the US to face charges.
D. Algeria
1. 50,000 people were
killed during the war between the Islamic Fundamentalists and
the secular Algerian government.
E. Egypt
1. They were the first
to sign a peace accord with the Israel government
2. As a result they recieve
the second largest amount in forgein aid for the US
a. First is Israel
F. Ethiopia and Eritrea
1. Eritrea is a new nation,
it was once a part of Ethiopia
2. Ethiopians don't like
the fact that Eritrea broke away because Ethiopia is now land
locked.
3. Ethiopian invaded
Eritrea in hopes of getting it back
G. Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo)
1. A new leader took
control two years, it was the first change of leadership since it
became an independent nation.
2. He came to power with
the help of Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania governments
3. These governments
are now supporting a rebellion that is trying to overthrow the
government.
4. They want to overthrow
the government because the leaders are pushing out
their top rating allies in government.
5. Nations to the west
came to the aid of the government and helped push out the
rebels
H. Somalia
1. War lords
run the country right now
2. Bush sent
US troops to help in the relief efforts
3. Reporter
were waiting on the beach for the Navy Seals to land
a. Seals did not like that
4. The troops
were pulled out after 18 were killed after engaging in a running battle
with rebels.
a. The troops were handing out food, when rebel attacked them
b. The killing ration was 50:1, so US was able to kill nearly 1,000 rebels
in the
battle
I. Kenya and Tanzania
1. The US
embassies in both countries were both bombed in the past several months
2. They both
have large Arab populations that contain many terrorists from the
Middle East.
J. South Africa
1.
The government created a commission, the Truth and Reconcilation
Committee, to investigate the past events so as to have an unbiased version
of
events.
2.
All the groups in government were hoping the blame would be put on the
other
groups.
3.
They were upset because the blame partially on everyone.
II. Kosovo
A. Serbians have not been resisting NATO air
strikes and no one is sure why.
B. Some possible reasons:
1. Some think he has
not tried to fight back because he is waiting to ambush the
NATO planes all in one attack.
2. Others think it is
because they have only attacked the air resources which are not
the most important part of the Yugoslovian armed forces.
a. The individual army units are and they could be next on NATOs list.
3. He is now bombing
other border countries and want to see what NATO will do
4. He may not care because
he has begun to increase the shelling of Kosovo
B. The air strikes were ordered by Head of NATO,
but was organized by US
C. Russians are supporting Serbians
1. Tried to send aircraft
and other weapons to Serbia, which is against the arm
embargo
2. Resentment is brewing
in Russia against the west
3. Yugoslovia is to Russia
what Israel is to the US
D. Wars
1. Since 1866 there
have been 250 wars, so it is rare for war to occur considering all
the possiblities there are for it .
2. Most are between two
countries, and only last for on average 90 days
a. WWI and WWII are the exceptions
3. Wars explode as the
more countries get involved
