.....continued from the last lecture (THE INDUSTRIAL OR MODERN CITY):

  • Plan Voisin: proposed plan by Le Corbusier accomodating large scale ideas. 18 scyscrapers, the center of the town was the luxury apartments, town was bisected by a large road (speed=success). Major intersection was a key point as the core of the city, had some green areas between the buildings.......this plan was never built
  • Radiant City: also by Le Corbusier. focused on residences, beaurucratic society. Had high rise apartments with shared services. City without classes. Rooftops with park areas......this plan also was never built, but some ideas were used in placed like Egypt, Ethiopia, and Puerto Rico

 


LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AS ANALYSIS, PROCESS (60s-80s):

IAN MCHARG (from Scotland):

  • Design with nature : bond with connecing humans and nature
  • Environment System Analysis (Ecological Planning)
  • Revolutionary approach: analyze land for usage, process becomes important part of design
  • Environmental Aesthetic: naturalistic architecture
  • Barrier islands-consist of parts which help to enclose....important for productivity
  • Example) Woodlands in Texas: large scale housing development. GOAL was to set new standards for working with nature

LAWRENCE HALPRIN:

  • He was a baseball player and an artist....Interest was in how people interact with the environment, how do they utilize the environment, creative processes
  • Designed places as interactive opportunities
  • Collective creativity: bring people together for ideas, socially aware
  • Borrows nature's character
  • Most of his work is urban
  • Example) Nicollett Mall: (Minneapolis), early conversion of downtown streets into pedestrian mall. Closed road except for buses and service
  • Example) Ira's Fountain: (Portland, OR), good urban experience, water has a variety of uses. You can interact with water. Intent is to relate people to nature in symbolic way.

RICHARD HAAG:

  • "Spirit of the site", understanding the place
  • Public Interaction
  • Example) Gasworks, Seattle. 72 year old industrial mess, wanted to turn it into a park. Resisted the idea of a pastoral park, so presented a vision of alternating recreation and industrial space. Became multiuse park reflecting history, most popular park in the Northwest
