ANCIENT ROME.....CONT.:

Applications:

  • Ancient Rome was a place of considerable material comfort
  • Had large, public baths for socializing, reading, sunbathing, exercise, etc...
  • Developed the dome such as the Pantheon which was a temple for all gods of Rome. The Pantheon is the oldest dome and it is still intact
  • Dedicated central open space to be a place of learning
  • Forum areas had a dramatic sense of majesty
  • Symmetric and monumental impacts on landscape
  • Homes were very orderly also
  • Domus City Houses= city homes, like refuges, which were somewhat crowded. These homes had many slaves working. Also contained gardens (atriums) and public latrines
  • These domus houses expanded the sense of the outdoors
  • The rooms showed the materialistic view of Roman life
  • Some began to think that the city life wasn't too great so they built Villa Rustica which was the simple, modern country home
  • The more wealthy built Villa Urbana which is the luxorious version of agricultural homes, very elaborated, with no big division between indoor and outdoor living
  • Haddrian's Villa consisted of an unfolding sequence of outdoor space which gave a sense of order between the units
  • Palimpsest refers to a historical document or artifact that was erased and rewritten, but there is still traces of the original document. It gives a sense of evolution

ISLAMIC INFLUENCE (8th-17th CENTURY):

~West was claimed by the Moors~

  • The Moors came from North Africa
  • Built the Alhambra, which was the capital fort which showed the sequencing of spaces with total balance and disorder

(FILM ABOUT THE ALHAMBRA):

  • Water was described as moving intentionally quietly, being reflective of the place around it and also signifying cleansing
  • Design elements such as stars and blue coloring contrasted the indoor/outdoor connection and the positioning of columns to resemble tents and oasis trees also were used to contrast with the outdoors
  • The design of the Alhambra has the same type of elements as previously viewed designs (courtyards, ets...), but they are more elaborated
