ANCIENT ROME (700BC.-200AD.):

Land/Environment:

  • Neutralized
  • Commodity: things were bought and sold

Socio-cultural Milieu:

  • "Here and Now" approach as opposed to the Greek's "ideal"
  • Empires were built based on power
  • Wanted to make history
  • Tight social and political organization
  • Technological innovation
  • Established long roads to move the troops
  • Recorded history in columns
  • Expanded cities from the center

Design Expression:

  • Organized, orderly and had much innovation
  • Bold and powerful
  • Axial and symmetrical

Applications:

  • Built roads and walls
  • Triumphal arches
  • Baths were very common
  • Fora/forum
  • Many sports and recreation sites such as the Panthenon and Roman Fora
