Exposure to violence

  • entertainment media
      • tv, books, magazines, music, videos
      • dramatizations of murder, rape, beatings
  • streets/community
      • fighting, mugging, killing
  • home
      • domestic disputes
      • child abuse, neglect
  • school
      • bullying, fights
      • at lunchtime, recess
      • hitting, kicking, punching, pushing, shoving
CDC (Centers for Disease Control) statistics: 8th graders at school
  • 1:5 (20%) of 8th graders have been threatened with a weapon
  • 1:10 (10%) of 8th graders have been injured with a weapon while they were at school
  • 1:2 (50%) have had property stolen
  • 22% have carried a weapon in the last 30 days
TV and violence
  • aggressor effect: tendency for people who watch many hours of TV to behave violently
  • fearfulness: TV heightens fear of becoming a victim of violence
  • bystander effect: people become callous and desensitized to acts of violence
  • cyclical effect: aggressive children who watch a lot of violent TV tend to identify with the violent characters and seek out more violent TV
