Prevention
-
Primary prevention- for young
people who have not yet initiated high risk behaviors. The goal is
to promote healthful lifestyles and prevent high risk behaviors before
they occur. The goal of the prevention program should focus on:
-
abstinence
-
delayed initiation of sexual activities
-
avoidance of ATOD associated with sexual behaviors
-
selection of friends where sexual risk taking and
substance abuse are not normative
-
Secondary prevention- for youth
who have already initiated one or more risky behaviors. The goals
of the prevention program should be:
-
If are sexually active:
-
use condoms correctly and consistently
-
monogamous activities with an uninfected partner
-
reduce the number of sexual partners
-
avoid injecting drugs
-
avoid sex with those who inject drugs
-
avoid or minimize alcohol and other drug use
-
If using alcohol or other psychoactive drugs:
-
avoid sharing needles
-
limit consumption
-
avoid driving while under the influence
-
avoid sexual activity while under the influence
-
Tertiary prevention- prevention
of reoccurrence of problem behaviors after the initial treatment or intervention.
For example preventing secondary problems associated with high risk behaviors
such as contracting HIV through IV drug use. The target audience
would be youth who have histories of multiple problem behaviors requiring
immediate intensive and comprehensive attention. The goals of the
program should be:
-
provide services for teenage moms to prevent rapid
repeat pregnancies and promote safer sex
-
provide alcohol and drug treatment and rehabilitation
services for teens with existing problems
-
provide treatment for students with severe mental
health disorders that contribute to multiple problem behaviors.
