      • The exam will be 50 questions.  35 will be multiple choice, 15 true/false
      • A review sheet for exam one will be passed out in class on Friday
      • The chapters on Teaching Techniques in the text will not be required for the exam.

SAFETY EDUCATION AND INJURY PREVENTION

  • The leading cause of death among school aged children is unintentional injury (text calls this accidents.)
  • Safety "injury" prevention
      • element of risk
      • degree of human error
  • The term "accident" is less preferable to the term "unintentional injury" because "accident" implies:
      • it happened by chance
      • it is nobody's fault
      • it was bad luck
  • 85% of all injuries are caused by human error
  • 15% of injuries are caused by hazardous conditions in the environment


Causes of injury to children

  • lack of motor skill
  • lack of awareness of consequences of their actions
  • "can't happen to me" ideology
  • curious by nature
  • lack of experience
  • lack attention/focus
  • peer pressure--mimic older kids
  • perception of risk is out of step with their maturation level
Safety at home
  • Leading cause of death in the home is fire
      • sources of heat
