The Comprehensive School Health Program contains eight elements.

  • School Health Instruction
  • School Health Services
  • School Health Environment
  • Physical Education
  • Nutrition Services
  • Counseling, Psychological, or Social Services
  • Faculty and Staff Health promotion
  • Parent and Community Involvement


School Health Instruction

  • Objectives should be consistent with child developmental needs
                        a.) Objectives should be directed toward behavioral outcomes (teach things that kids can practice --such as
                              brushing their teeth).
                        b.) Objectives should be age appropriate.
                        c.) Objectives should focus on major health objectives for the nation.
  • There should be integration of health related material into curricula.
  • Health instruction should include parents and family. (Send information home to parents related to what you are teaching
    the children in school so the family can reinforce the lessons.)
  • School health instruction contains ten content areas


The ten content areas within School Health Instruction
       1.) mental and emotional health--includes the concepts of self concept, social awareness, managing stress, solving
                                                             problems, respecting cultural diversity, and assuming personal responsibility for health



                    Teach Life skills--your goal: students will~

                  • have optimal health
                  • gain health knowledge
                  • make responsible decisions (low risk decisions)
                  • use resistance skills when appropriate
                  • choose behaviors that promote a healthy mind
                  • express feelings in a positive way
                  • practice stress management
        2.) family life education / human sexuality--includes the concepts of family roles and responsibilities, communication
                                                                              skills, sexual orientation, human reproductive system

                    Teach Life skills--your goal: students will~

                  • develop relationship skills
                  • avoid discrimination
                  • practice conflict resolution
                  • strive for positive family relationships
                  • practice skills to promote abstinence
        3.) Body systems / growth and development--includes the concepts of human body systems (i.e. cardiovascular), the
                                                                                human senses, and human development

                    Teach Life skills--your goal: students will~

                  • care for their body systems
                  • recognize how the human body changes during growth
                  • accept their physical uniqueness
                  • achieve developmental tasks that are age appropriate
                  • learn about contraception, pregnancy, childbirth
        4.) nutrition--includes concepts of sources of food, the food guide pyramid, food fads, body types, and eating
                              disorders

                    Teach Life skills--your goal: students will~

                  • recognize the six major nutrients
                  • select appropriate servings from the food pyramid
                  • follow dietary guidelines
                  • read food labels
                  • select food to reduce risk for disease
                  • maintain desirable weight
                  • recognize signs of eating disorders
        5.) personal health--includes the concepts of grooming and self care, personal wellness, hygiene, fitness
 
                    Teach Life skills--your goal: students will~
                  • be well groomed
                  • care for their ears and eyes
                  • have regular physical check ups
                  • follow a dental plan
                  • get adequate rest and sleep
                  • participate in physical activity
