Teacher's Role in Health Education

  • recognizing lifestyle choices
--50% of all deaths are a direct result of lifestyle choices
The number one  cause of death is cardiovascular disease (very preventable-related to lifestyle choices.)

--10% of all deaths are due to the health delivery system (i.e. a mistake in the hospital)

--20% of all deaths are due to environmental factors

--20% of all deaths are due to hereditary factors (i.e. inherit gene for breast cancer)

  • act as a preventionist
--start early (i.e. prevent use of alcohol / drugs by educating students; nutrition ed-reduce high fat food intake
  • create a positive learning environment
            --make sure student feels
                                                        a.) comfortable
                                                        b.) confident
                                                        c.) wanted
  • Creating a positive learning environment involves
--learning and using name of student (hearing own name makes students feel good about themselves)

--share feeling with students (students can modify their behaviors with input from you)

            --practice courtesy with your students

--arrange time when you can speak quietly with each student

--spread your attention evenly, keeping special watch for a student who needs special attention (some students
need more of your attention than others)

Positive Role Modeling

  • 95% of all learning occurs through modeling
  • Social learning theory: all learning is through modeling
  • Consider these questions concerning role modeling
-- If teachers work in smoke free schools, should they remain tobacco free?
== yes, according to social learning theory, but if you do smoke, be honest with the students.  If you try to hide your
habits from the students they will lose respect for you.

--If teachers teach alcohol prevention and non-use of alcohol, should they not drink at all, or not drink alcohol in public
                places?
==make sure you consider cross cultural differences in views of alcohol.  If a student sees a parent enjoy a glass
of wine at dinner every night and you stress non-use...the child will think there is something wrong with their parent
                == stress non-ABUSE, not non-USE
