Lecture notes:

I. Hawaii

    A. Intra-plate volcanism - not on margin of plates; caused by something other than convection system; can occur on
land or in oceans; not part of earth's main convective cooling system

        1. Cause - mantle plume; second convective system for cooling core

        2. Can find them because they are linear chains of volcanoes (not curved)

        3. Age prgression - young to old

    B. Hot spot (mantle plume) - one little spot of volcanic activity; not along the line of where most occur; happen
between the core and the mantle; *(in hot spots, their age corresponds to its area (intra-plate volcanism)

    C. Hawaii is the biggest of the islands is because it is the youngest island

    D. The majority of volcanic activity is on Hawaii

    E. Once volcanic eruptions begin, they are very contained in area and eruptive peaks; considered very safe

    F. Three (3) volcanic edifices in Hawaii

            1. Kilowea - has a big hole in the middle with little pits that are very active

            2. Maunakea

            3. Mauna Loa

    G. The noise of flowing, cooled lava sounds like someone's breaking glass everywhere

    H. Basaltic lava forms shapes that look like rope; it turns into a molasses type consistency; lowest viscousity (not
        sticky)

    I. Lava from Hawaii in around 100 years will be very easily healthy for vegetation whereas in Iceland the lava will not
        due to the climate

    J. Drain vac - lava flows down into this hole
