Lecture notes:     The green text refers to slides displayed during recitation.

Topic Question: Why have there been no great woman artists?

    • Do you agree?
    • If this statement is true (or partially true) why is it so?
    Possible Answers:
    • lack of education
    • lack of access to life drawing classes (with nudes)
    • best alternative was to be related to/married to an artist
    • being an artist was considered selfish
      • spending too much time on herself and too little on her family
    Other Ideas to Consider:
  • male creative genius versus woman as nature
    • sometimes women were depicted as earth goddesses, other times as objects of nature
    • e.g. "Luncheon on the Grass" by Manet
    • e.g. "Nature Unveiling Herself Before Science"
  •     what makes art feminine?
    • subject matter?
    • painting style (light, fluffy vs. bold)
    • or is it imposed on the work by the viewer once the gender is known?
