    Romanticism

  • late 18th century (medieval flare--ruins, knights, etc.)
  • romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian--a lot of novels written in these)
  • whole attitude, state-of-mind
  • shipwrecks, travel, contemporary events
  • scientific advancements
  • rise of middle class--becoming patrons, commissioners
  • awareness of human rights and the individual
  • enlightenment

Constable and Turner (two big artists of the time)

  • real concern for sky, light, and atmosphere
  • did a lot of scientific observation
    • how things look and how they will appear when, for example, a storm is brewing
  • harmony with humans--but not major part of his art work
    Turner
  • swirling color
  • slaves thrown overboard--crime against the individual
  • unbridled, wild nature
  • feel like you are not in the painting, just witnessing what is in front of you
