Centralized Plan versus Basilica/Latin Cross/Cruciform/Longitudinal
  • the centralized plan is unlike the basilica plan in that each of the arms are the same length and do not appear to form a Christian cross
  • the basilicas (public meeting places) were adopted by Christianity because the existing temples were too closely associated with Paganism
Vitruvius
  • lived 46-30 BCE
  • recorded classical Greek architecture (idealized system)
  • his works were rediscovered by scholars in the Renaissance
  • had an impact on Florentine humanists (beginning in early 15th C.)

Trabeation: series of post and lintel construction (like arcade with post and lintel)
